Putting the 'man'... by ~Butchers:iconButchers:

Putting the 'man' back in Emmanuel

Can you imagine him
When nobody else was around

In those quiet moments
Where he had a brief opportunity
To put his sandaled feet up
Or to snack upon a fig or two

It is hard to think of him
Without also envisioning
A cohort of loyal disciples and skeptics alike
Flanking him from either side
Unendingly pandering him with questions
And requests for miracles

The Gospel writers never talked about
The 'private Christ'
The man he was behind closed doors
When he had time to gather his thoughts
And reflect upon
A busy day's work

Though I suppose
These must have been the points at which
He was his truest self
Completely removed from the hype of celebrity
Along with all of the pressures that accompany it

And what if you just so happened
To stumble in on this lonely messiah
Reclining on a chair near a simple kind of bed
In an otherwise empty mud-brick room

What would you do?

Would you sit on the bed by his chair
And listen intently
As he revealed to you
Universal truths
Pearls of wisdom
From the clam of Heaven himself

Then again,
You could make small talk
“How about this weather we've been having”
And, “So what does your father do?”
(Little would you know, these questions are inextricably linked)

Or perhaps you would simply sit there in silence
With Jesus Christ
On this dusty March afternoon
Eating figs and thinking about
How agreeable it is to be doing very little at all

Very well written, I really like this.

I love it. If Jesus existed he was a man, not God made flesh. I would like to talk to him about the weather, and eat figs with him. I really must extend my vocabulary so that i can bombard you with synonyms of "great stuff". Until then though. Great stuff!

Society is a collective and as a collective it forces out the very individuals it seeks to create. This is why we who try to define ourselves as ourselves are so often ostracised

Not only a great poem, but hugely thought provoking. It's hard to relate to a God, perfect in every way and who's every known deed is thought to speak volumes about the deepest questions ever asked. What great deeds and humanising 'flaws' did He show, we'll never know, for they were not important enough to be recorded as gospel. Hell, over half his life was unrecorded in any book, stories and myths spread up but none were cannonical or anywhere near the time. No matter how hard Anglicans and Liberal theologians look for the historical jesus, the man we can understand, follow and aspire to be like, they'll find nothing powerfull enough to shake those who's faith rests upon miraicles and the power he was believed to have to judge, to benefit the prayrfull and destroy their enemies; the historical jesus, whoever he is, is unlikely to be found and even less likely to convince those who believe to act more like he acted and be more like him.
